Prague, May 15th, 2008Calling All IYLA Alumni to Help with the 2nd IYLA
Civic Concepts International is now in the planning stages for the next International Youth Leadership Africa in South Africa. “After the Success of the first IYLA which was the pilot conference run by CCI Czech Republic, we always knew that the interest was there for a long-term future for this project,” commented William Webster, Executive Director of CCI, “now it is time to pull our sleeves up and make International Youth Leadership Africa as big as the IYLC in Prague,” which is CCI’s preeminent leadership project. CCI is calling on all past alumni, founders and individuals associated with the 1st IYLA to help encourage interest and help promote future conferences. Webster expanded on this, “working with the top young leaders from every corner of the world for ten years now, I have rarely been as impressed with a group than I was with the alumni from the 1st IYLA and the success of future events will have a great deal to do with their support.” CCI is announcing a few positions that it needs filled in order to get through the initial planning stages and can get to the actual organization of the 2nd Cape Town, South African IYLA. These positions include Project Administrator as well as five Project Associates who will be in charge of different regions including Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Southern Africa, the Americas and Eurasia, helping recruit partner universities and future participants. CCI is looking for individuals who can commit 5 to 10 hours a week in the initial stages and once the project is launched and the dates are announced, can commit more time to the initiative. The Project Administrator position will be a bit more involved and this individual will be responsible for bringing together all elements of IYLA. The person that takes on this role will be the point person for the project and once CCI officially launches the 2nd IYLA this position will change to Project Manager and eventually Conference Director. Two weeks before the Zimbabwean election, Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC opposition candidate, seems to be doing very well in early polling, which could mean the end of Robert Mugabe’s 21 year Presidency. Tsvangirai, while attending the 1st IYLA in Cape Town, January 2007 spoke to the delegates describing how democracy and peaceful opposition to the government were the only answer to a transition from the Mugabe government. Tsvangirai was accompanied by the MDC Treasurer Roy Bennett and joined the IYLA delegates in a visit to Robin Island, the incarceration site of Nelson Mandela for 27 years. Within two months of his involvement with the IYLA in Sunny Cape Town, Tsvangirai was beaten and jailed by government authorities after conducting a peaceful prayer service in a suburb of Harare, Zimbawe. Now, a year later Tsvangirai’s political fortunes may be changing. It was discussed that at that time a project management team would be put together, and that CCI would be looking for institutional partners in addition to strengthening its relationship with the NRM-Youth League and the office of the President in Charge of Youth Affairs. Additionally, plans were discussed to meet with other IYLA founders, Ben Karuga and Etonde Martin while in the region, with the intention of making presentations to promote the 2nd IYLA.
“The first IYLA was held in Cape Town, South Africa, its birthplace”, explained Webster, “and it is important to us to keep our South African connection.” It was discussed that the IYLA is an African event, and that in the future CCI and the IYLA envision possibly holding three conferences a year in Africa: one in the south, South Africa; one in the east, Uganda; and one in the west, the location of which will have to be negotiated.
